Employment permit

What you need for your career start

In order to work in Germany, an employment permit is a pre-requisite.

As a citizen of the EU, you have unrestricted access to the German labor market. You require neither a visa nor a permit of residence to enter the country or to be employed in Germany. The same applies if you come from Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Iceland or Norway.

If you come to Germany from a state outside the European Union or the European Economic Area, you will need title of residence in order to take up a position of employment – which can be applied for at a German diplomatic representation, or in Germany at an Aliens authority office – as well as approval from the Central Foreign- and Professional Agency (ZAV).

There are special regulations for certain groups (e.g. skilled workers from shortage occupations, EU Blue Card holders, researchers, self-employed persons, employees who come to Germany as part of internal company transfer). Please do not hesitate to contact us or your employer.
