Leisure tips

The Bayreuth region offers an incredible range of sports in both summer and winter.

Summer in Bayreuth

From the city center to the countryside? Here Bayreuth sets almost record times: Jogging trails along the Red Main River or mountain bike routes directly in the wooded area behind the Festspielhaus lead sports enthusiasts in no time to nature, swimming lakes, climbing rocks and new sporting adventures for an active summer.
We have listed a few offers here.

Cycling

Pedal one last time and then it's actually done! At the latest, the view of the panorama of Franconian Switzerland or the Fichtel Mountains will take the breath away of even the most athletic. Tours on the Main Radweg or the Burgenstraße, which leads from Mannheim to Bayreuth along castles and historic walls, require somewhat less use of the thighs. If you want to give your muscles a rest, you can try the thermal spa tour: After short stages, the thermal spas of Bad Rodach, Bad Colberg, Bad Staffelstein, Obernsees and Bayreuth invite you to immerse yourself and relax.

Hiking

For many hikers a fantastic view, a cold beer on a brewery hike or a cave tour in the Franconian Switzerland are among the highlights. Barrier-free hiking trails lead through the rock garden Sanspareil, through the Trubach valley or along the Pottenstein adventure mile. 3,600 km of pure hiking trails await summit strikers in the Fichtel Montains, including routes around and up the 1024-meter-high Ochsenkopf, the large Waldstein loop or the Schneeberg, at 1052 meters the highest mountain in northern Bavaria.

Climbing

Around 12,000 routes and 800 rocks: The Franconian Switzerland attracts climbing professionals from all over the world with its unique limestone formations. Cracks, edges, overhangs, beer handles and finger holes provide variety and challenging tours. If you want to train before your climbing excursion, you can go bouldering on the Buchstein - a rock on the outskirts of Bayreuth - or shimmy along the walls of the German Alpine Club's climbing center in Bayreuth.

Tennis

Always stay on the ball: Tennis requires good stamina and coordination. If you want to smash a few balls over the court, you can do so in Bayreuth at the local clubs TC Rot-Weiß, TC Grün-Weiß or TC Lerchenbühl. Even non-members can book a court there. There are also well-maintained tennis courts everywhere in the district municipalities.

Golf

Aim, take your swing, pull the trigger - and hopefully hit one of the 27 holes! It's bound to work if you don't let yourself get distracted by the beautiful view. The Bayreuth golf course offers a unique view over the roofs of the city and the panorama of the Franconian Switzerland. In addition, the course is characterized by its links course character, which is rarely found in Germany. For new golfers there are trial lessons at the weekend. Pottenstein-Weidenloh also offers exclusive golfing in beautiful surroundings.

Winter in Bayreuth region

Hibernation? Not in Bayreuth!
As soon as the first snowflakes fall, snowballs fly through the air, pucks and blades skate across the ice and snowshoes leave their tracks in the white blanket.
The sports on offer in the city and the region keep your body and circulation moving even at sub-zero temperatures and melt a snowflake or two on your forehead.

Skifahrer auf der Piste

Alpinski/Snowboard

Go downhill with two boards or one on your feet. The wind in your face, snowflakes on the tip of your nose, past snow-covered fir trees, through the white winter paradise. Skiers and boarders whiz down the slopes on 22 pistes in the Fichtel Mountains. For those who are still a bit wobbly on their feet and boards, the local winter sports schools will give them a jump start. The Franconian Switzerland is also home of two smaller ski areas in Muggendorf and Spies with downhill runs of 200 and 350 meters.

Cross country skiing

Bright blue skies, glistening snowfields and clear air provide the necessary momentum on the cross-country trail. The cross-country skiing areas in the Fichtel Mountains offer more than 200 km of winter fun - among others around the Ochsenkopf, at the Waldstein or Kornberg. 18 km long is the cross-country trail near Pegnitz, in Franconian Switzerland. And the 4 km long circuit on the golf course in Weidenloh, above Pottenstein, is an ideal entry route - even for the very young cross-country skiers.

Toboggan & Sledding

In summer, celebrities meet there, and when the first snow falls, sleds descend the snow-covered meadow behind the Festspielhaus. ``Make way!`` can also be heard in Schlosspark Fantasie, on the natural toboggan runs in Leienfels-Graisch Moorbad or in Warmensteinach-Fleckl. In addition, the Frankenbob with its 1,000-meter-long track is ready for a ride in Pottenstein in any weather.

Winter hiking

Those who know routes only from summer excursions experience a miracle in winter. Now it is time to find and discover the hiking trails under the snow cover - or to follow the snowshoe tracks of those who have gone before. The tour planner for snowshoe hikes in Franconian Switzerland or the information provided by the Nordic Parcs Fichtelgebirge can help you prepare.

Schlittschuhe

Ice skating and Ice hockey

At breakneck speed, Bayreuth's EHC professionals chase across the ice and after the puck. Around 4,500 spectators have room in Bayreuth's ice stadium to watch the clubs play ice hockey, curling, figure skating and speed skating. Those who dare to take to the ice themselves can take a leisurely spin or skate across the surface to the hot beats of the ice disco. The Pegnitz ice stadium is also a great place to practice pirouettes, and in really cold winters, the lakes in the surrounding area are also a popular skating destination.
